Time to start lifting, ladies: Studies show that strength training decreases risk for Osteoporosis Posted May 12, 2007 at 11:00 AM by Megan Hueter Osteoporosis threatens the health of an estimated 44 million Americans, making it a major public health concern. In the Unite States alone, approximately 10 million individuals already fight the disease and almost 34 million more have low bone mass, placing them at an increased risk for osteoporosis. Of the 10 million Americans struggling with osteoporosis, eight million (80%) are women. Bone factures caused by Osteoporosis significantly lower a person’s quality of life. However, new studies show that women participating in resistance training programs can actually strengthen their bones and decrease their risks for developing osteoporosis. Osteoporosis, literally meaning “porous bone,” is a disease characterized by low bone mass and structural deterioration of bone tissue.
