Although there are a couple different ways of figuring out your target heart rate, the following equation is the easiest one to use. First, subtract your age from 220. The number you get is your maximum heart rate in beats per minute. Take that number and multiply it by (.55) and (.80). The range you get is the range you will want to keep your heart beating at. If you are a beginner, keep the intensity towards the lower end of the range (55% of your maximum heart rate.) As you get stronger and more fit, you will find it’s easier to push yourself and maintain your heart rate at a higher intensity level (80% of your maximum heart rate).
