It is imperative that all men and women know the defining symptoms of a heart attack. Unfortunately, most people do not. A new CDC report based on a telephone poll of over 70,000 Americans discovered that most didn’t know the five warning signs of a heart attack. Also, not all those who were polled thought they would call 911 at the first indicator of a cardiac problem.
If any possibility exists that you may be having a heart attack, timing is crucial. “That knowledge gap could be deadly. Certain drugs can stop heart attacks, but they should ideally be given within an hour after heart attack symptoms start.”
Here is a list of symptoms from WebMD.
• Pain or discomfort in the jaw, neck, or back
• Feeling weak, lightheaded, or faint
• Chest pain or discomfort
• Pain or discomfort in the arms or shoulder
• Shortness of breath
According to the CDC research poll, only a limited number of people knew the warning signs and knew what action to take. “Only 31 percent knew all five major signs of a heart attack, only 27 percent knew all five signs and said they would call 911, and only 16 percent knew all five signs, said they would call 911, and knew that sudden eye problems weren’t a heart attack symptom.”
The best action you can take is to call 911 right away. Make sure that your friends and family members are familiar with the warming signs.
