I strive to be un-impeachable in my nutrition information. To that end, I want to take in all the sides of research on any new products and discoveries before I give my clients advice.
Regarding Enova, my first reaction was that it was not a good food product. It is made from soy and canola oils, which are refined polyunsaturated oils. I recommend reducing the consumption of these polyunsaturated oils and increasing the use of monounsaturated, high quality saturated oils and the best quality animal fats from free range, grass-eating animals.
Here is a quote from the makers of Enova:
“Enova oil is an exciting and entirely new type of oil, the first and only cooking oil that can help millions of Americans with their struggle to maintain a healthy weight and fight obesity,” said G. Allen Andreas, Chairman and Chief Executive, Archer Daniels Midland Company (producers of Enova)… “Because of its chemical structure, more of Enova oil is burned directly by the body as energy, rather than stored as fat. This means Enova oil can actually help people maintain or lose weight when included in a sensible diet. A study recently completed by the Chicago Center for Clinical Research has shown that, over a 24-week period, people who incorporated Enova oil into a calorie-controlled diet reduced their weight by an average of 3.6 percent, and their body fat mass by 8.3 percent.” (source: www.worldfoodscience.org)
The study presented as proof of Enova’s benefit suggests that it was the use of Enova and a calorie controlled diet that led to weight loss. But would the calorie-controlled diet alone produce these results?
Beyond this, there is not a lot of research on Enova that I could scrape together. The main difference between Enova and other oils is that the molecular structure of Enova has been changed from predominantly triglycerides to diglycerides, which is supposed to burn more as fuel and get stored less as fat. This only works in a calorie restricted diet, not in a high calorie diet, and it does not work if the body’s metabolism is impaired in any way.
The bottom line, from my perspective, is that Enova is a highly refined oil. I recommend avoiding highly refined oils and following an integrative nutrition diet and lifestyle for healthy weight loss. Weight loss is a complex process and one should not sacrifice total health in the process.
