The hamstrings, or backs of the legs, are often one of the tightest muscles for most people. The following move is a great way to stretch this area, but be sure to warm up before performing it to avoid injury. To begin, stand up straight with good posture by keeping your shoulders back and your abs drawn in. Bend one leg up behind you so your heel is by your butt and you are standing on one leg. If need be, you can place a hand on a wall to help keep your balance.
In a controlled movement, quickly straighten the leg that is bent behind you and extend it forward in a kicking motion. Only raise it in front of you as far as you can without allowing it to bend at the knee. Return to starting position and repeat 5 times. Switch legs and perform another set of 5 reps.
Remember: Do not force your leg any higher then you feel comfortable. You should feel a stretch down the back of you leg, but anything past mild discomfort means you are stretching too far. Avoid any bouncing movements; always keep your movements fluid and controlled. If you feel any sharp or unusual pain, do not continue this move and consult your doctor.
