Salt Lake CityHer Active Travels invites you to broaden your horizons – within your own borders. From must-see sights to must-eat restaurants, we’re giving you the lowdown on the best and brightest cities for an active, adventurous weekend getaway.

This week, we’re venturing to the Crossroads of the West - Salt Lake City, Utah. If the most you’ve seen of Salt Lake was the 2002 coverage of the Olympic Games, it may be time to take a second look at this historic urban center. First settled in the late 19th century, Salt Lake features gorgeous mountains and a booming tourist industry that includes notable theatre and arts events.

Go With: This is a family-friendly city, so bring the kids for a weekend getaway adventure of outdoor tours and evenings of fun theatre outings.

See It: With many famous museums to choose from, pick your favorite topic and spend an afternoon out of the cold, at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, Utah Museum of Natural History, or the Museum of Church History and Art.

Walk It: The Wasatch Mountains near Salt Lake offer great hiking. The Big Water Trail is an easy, 3 hour trek near popular Dog Lake - the perfect stop for a mid-hike picnic. For more information on the hiking you can enjoy during your trip, visit Utah’s Largest Travel Site.

Work It: The Gallivan Centre is a large public area featuring art projects, an amphiteatre - and an outdoor skating rink. As of November 16th, you can rent skates and get a brisk workout, or for those less adept on ice, take private lessons. Visit the Centre online to learn more about rentals and public skating hours.

Eat It: Sage’s Cafe is a vegetarian and organic bistro famous for its faux escargot - find out if the soy imitation lives up to the hype. This four-star restaurant also features a four-course raw tasting menu on the last Friday of each month, and the entire menu is a dream for vegetarians whose usual “fine dining” experience involves pasta with primavera sauce. Check out Sage’s online for more info and to make reservations.

Night Life: The Grand Theatre, run by Salt Lake Community College, offers affordable performances meant to promote theatre in the local area and support regional performers. Past shows have included The Secret Garden and A Thousand Clowns, and adult tickets start at $10. You can buy tickets online at the Grand Theatre website.
