Friday’s Poll: Are You Eating Your Fruits and Veggies?

Section: Her Health, Her Nutrition, Healthy Eating

fruitThe CDC has a great new site called Fruits and Veggies Matter. Using an interactive tool, you can plug in your sex and age and level of physical activity to see how many fruits and vegetables you need to consume each day. Supposedly I need 2 cups of fruit and 2.5 cups of vegetables. Why is that important? This is what the CDC says. “Compared to people who eat only small amounts of fruits and vegetables, those who eat more generous amounts—as part of a healthy diet—are likely to have reduced risk of chronic diseases. These diseases include stroke, type 2 diabetes, some types of cancer, and perhaps heart disease.” Now we all know we need to make healthy eating a priority, but how good of a job are you doing?

Another resource being use to improve kid’s nutritional status is a new book “The ABC’s of Fruits and Vegetables and Beyond.” Out only a few months and already being bought in quantity for class use. I hope parents and teachers interested in getting kids to develop a friendly attitude towards fruits and vegetables should take a look at it.
It is designed for kids of all ages as it is two books in one – children first learn their alphabet through produce poems and then go on to hundreds of related activities. Coauthored by best-selling food writer David Goldbeck and Jim Henson writer Steve Charney. More at HealthyHighways.com
