Having a Mother with Osteoporosis can Lead to Increased Risk for Spinal Fracture

(ARA) - Of the 10 million Americans with osteoporosis, 80 percent are women, and having a mother with osteoporosis puts a daughter particularly at risk for fractures.
Priscilla Turner, 67, of Memphis, Tenn., knows this risk all too well. Her 90-year-old mother, Jewell Fondren, suffers from osteoporosis (a disease that causes bone to become weak and susceptible to fracture). During the past 30 years, Fondren has experienced a hip fracture, spinal fractures and has a hunched back that may have been caused by multiple spinal fractures. Fondren, who lives with her daughter, has difficulty walking, cannot bend and finds her clothes don’t fit well because of her hunched back.
Two years ago, Turner seemed to be heading toward the same fate as her mother when she suffered from back pain. Turner saw her doctor and discovered she had a spinal fracture. She was also diagnosed with osteopenia or low bone mineral density that can lead to osteoporosis.
Exercise May Improve Kidney Function

We already know that exercise helps to prevent heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, obesity and certain cancers, and may extend life span. Now a report from Italy shows that exercise may also help to prevent kidney damage that occurs with aging (Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine, May 2008).
Doctors measure kidney function by calculating the ability of the kidneys to rid the body of a breakdown product of metabolism called creatinine. Regular exercisers have lower blood creatinine levels and also have kidneys that are better able to clear creatinine from the bloodstream as measured by a test called Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR).
Tip for Today: Keep Drinking

More research is showing that the idea of aiming for 8 glasses of water a day is a myth. What is not a myth, however, is the need to stay hydrated. What’s important to know is that juice and tea can have the same hydrating effects as water. The benefits include, and are not limited to, an increase in your overall energy, the removal of toxins from the body, help with weight loss (as you feel fuller longer) and keeping skin healthy. If plain water is too boring for you, spruce it up with a lemon wedge or even a cucumber slice. If that doesn’t work try different fruit juices (made of 100% juice) and hot and cold teas.
